Assembly election LIVE Updates: Bengal BJP has named a total of 22 TMC turncoats as BJP candidates for the upcoming Bengal assembly election. The names include former TMC heavyweight Mukul Roy, actors Rudranil Ghosh, Parno Mitra among others.BJP Candidate List 2021: Bharatiya Janata Janata (BJP) on Thursday unveiled names of as many as 148 candidates who will be representing the party for the much-crucial West Bengal Assembly polls, slated to begin from March 27. The list consists of several incumbent lawmakers, Union Ministers, film personalities and Trinamool Congress (TMC) turncoats.
Kolkata: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday announced its candidates for the last four phases of the West Bengal assembly election but included two politicians who are not part of BJP and have publicly criticised their ‘nomination’.

The saffron party nominated late veteran Congress leader Somen Mitra’s wife Shikha Mitra from the central Kolkata seat of Chowringhee and outgoing Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from Kashipur-Belgachhia constituency of north Kolkata, Mala Saha’s husband, Tarun Saha. Mala Saha was denied a ticket by the TMC for the upcoming election, which instead nominated deputy mayor of Kolkata, Atin Ghosh.

Through a video message, Mitra said, “I am not in BJP. I never was. It’s not possible for me to contest on a BJP ticket.”

Expressing shock over hearing the news of his nomination, Tarun Saha told a reporter present there, “I was busy with the campaign of our candidate and suddenly, I got to know that BJP named me as their candidate. I have not joined the BJP. They named me as a candidate without even consulting me.” Saha is a popular face of north Kolkata and a veteran TMC councillor in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

As per reports, party’s slatwart leaders including BJP national vice-president Mukul Roy, MP Jagannath Sarkar, actress Parno Mitra has been given ticket by the BJP in the upcoming polls.

Other names in the list include Shamik Bhattacharya – BJP’s Bengal spokesperson, actor Rudranil Ghosh, former state president Rahul Sinha, Mukul Roy’s son Subhrangshu Roy, Rajarhat MLA Sabyasachi Dutta, TMC turncoat Jeetendra Tiwari, Agnimitra Pal among others. Mamata Banerjee has released TMC’s manifesto for the assembly election, promising a monthly Universal Basic Income for all families, a credit card scheme for students to pursue higher studies and formation of a task force to examine the inclusion of several backward communities under the OBC category. In Tamil Nadu, actor-turned politician Khushbu Sundar filed her nomination for the Tamil Nadu assembly election as a BJP candidate and declared assets worth about Rs 22.55 crore. In an embarrassment for the BJP, two candidates have refused poll tickets hours after they were named by the party in a list of 148 candidates for the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections that was released on Thursday (March 18). Top leaders like Mukul Roy and Rahul Sinha are also on the list.

TMC’s sitting Kashipur Belgachhia MLA Mala Saha, wife of Tarun Saha who has been fielded by the BJP from the seat, told The Federal that she and her husband are still in the Trinamool Congress [TMC] and there is not question of her husband contesting on a BJP ticket.

Mala Saha, who was not given a ticket by the TMC this time, said they were not consulted by the BJP before including her husband’s name on their candidates’ list.

The party is facing protests and resignations as many of its aspiring old-timers did not find their names in the list of candidates.

Roy’ son Subranghshu, a sitting TMC MLA, state BJP Mahila Morcha president Agnimitra Paul, film personalities Rudranil Ghosh, Srabanti Chattopadhyay and Parno Mitra were among those given tickets by the saffron party.
